which birds is the one-man sound outputting outfit of justin barnes. armed with samples, synthesizers, guitar, trombone, voice, and shear volume, which birds produces a pompously unique take on pop music song structures and loud, meditative drone textures. born out of the realm of the harsh, trust-funded noise music of his previous band - werewolf unit, which birds retains the gross, bourgeois wealth, but softens the noise. what is left is an energetic, entrancing live show that envelops the audience with waves of alternating gentle and powerful pop-influenced hypnotic sounds.
working with friends from across the country, barnes takes extended collaborative, spectrum-spanning recordings and converts them into palatable sound bytes to provide the base for trombone and guitar fueled platonic love ballads to his dog. capitalizing on the range of emotions observed in his continuing relationship with the dark-haired beast, which birds songs and performances travel far musical distances reflecting that emotional variety.
what matters - and what is important - is the shared, positive experience of artist and audience. be it sonic or visual, which birds takes great pride and genuine care in welcoming the audience in, despite the alienating surroundings.
which birds is fully self-sufficient, can travel great physical distances with ease, and is willing to perform merely for acclaim and praise. barnes has been privileged to share a stage or performance space with such fantastic musical entities as dan deacon, lightning bolt, matt and kim, height with friends, nuclear power pants, ecstatic sunshine, landed, wuume, and greg lesar.
